• I'm a history buff, and as an American born Chinese, I've been reading a lot of Chinese historical fiction. I originally tried delving into Chinese Historical Non-fiction, but everything I found was way too dry or political. This book breaks down the most important historical figures of Chinese history into easy to read short stories that tell their historical impact. What's amazing about Chinese history is that the stories are gripping, wise, and dramatic. It's so fun to read and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to pick something up about Chinese history. Its the perfect blend of fiction and non-fiction!
• I just got the book yesterday and have read 6 out of the 36 stories so far. To my surprise, the book is quite an easy read. It keeps the difficult Chinese names at the minimum and presents interesting stories and characters.
  
  "Heaven gave uniforms to the Yellow Emperor's army and books to the Yellow Emperor to teach him to organize his soldiers for battle. He invented a war chariot that could quickly transport troops anywhere they were needed, and drums to give commands to his soldiers at long range..."
  
  It's fascinating to read about military strategies in 3,000 B.C., mixed with myths and legends.
  
  Great content for my children to complement their Chinese language studies!
• First I thought this is going to be an academical style history of China's most important figures, BUT it's wonderful and very easy to read and understand book full of bite-size stories. Recommending it for everybody interested in history.

• Usually when you think of history, the emphasis is on "big" things, like the rise and fall of empires, or wars. But like its title implies, People Who Shaped China focuses on a few dozen important characters who left their names throughout China's 5,000 years of history. It is an interesting way to introduce such a broad topic.
• For a country with such a long and rich culture, it is quite disheartening to see that much of its majestic history has been purposefully discarded and forgotten. Especially under the dictatorship of the Chinese Communist Party, what was once regarded as the essence of human virtue and morality is today completely ignored and neglected. Filial piety? Undying loyalty? Honesty and sincerity? All just mere concepts in a corrupted and polluted society.
  
  This book tells the stories of important historical figures who shaped China. Not the China today, but the China with a rich and beautiful history. Stories from mythical and godly figures to valiant generals who has never lost a battle, this book explores the compelling history of a rich 5000 year old culture in comprehensive yet simple wording.

  1. The people described in this book all work very hard and, frequently, VERY long hours.
  
  2. Regular, extended exercise - usually walking - is frequently an important part of their routines.
  
  3. They're mostly early risers, with significant exceptions, and do their best work in the first several hours of the day. There are a few nightowls but not many.
  
  4. They have a work routine that they adhere to almost fanatically.
  
  5. Finally, implicitly, habits are key in their successes and productivity.
  
  There, I've saved you the price of this book.
  
  The stories about the different artists are frequently interesting on their own account and very useful in fleshing out the "takeaways" listed above. I don't think it's intended as a self-help book. The author doesn't attempt to derive a series of lessons from his subjects' activities but a pattern emerges after reading a lot of these.
• Small format books ask us not to take them seriously, but don't be fooled here. This little gem is a fount of inspiration for anyone with creative urges and dreams. The diversity of creators represented is a welcoming affirmation that whoever you are and however you create, there's a place for you at the table. If you're disciplined, you'll find models of discipline. If you're a hard partier, you'll have good company. If you're reclusive, you'll be affirmed in your desire and need for solitude. Mason Currey has done a fine job bringing creators from many centuries into our awareness to speak for themselves or be spoken about. Thank you.
• Excellent book for those readers who want to get a glimpse into the schedules of extraordinary talented artists...namely, that even true masters have to find the mundane ritual of daily routine a necessity when creating great work. The creative process is often thought of as elusive and transient, however this book goes to great lengths to show how a steady working schedule can often lead to some of the modern world's greatest creative achievements. Very inspiring for those wanting to create some kind of art in their day...
• This book was described in a catalog I receive. It sounded interesting so I checked out a copy from the local library. Half way through reading a library copy I ordered a copy. If you do creative work of any kind you are probably trying to find out how to organize your time and effort for best results. I am. I wanted to see how successful artists do it. This book is heavily researched and also very readable. It is not a 1,2 & 3 and you will be successful type book. It is about life stories. I bought a copy for ongoing reference. I have read it through and i'll be referring to it over the years.
• Mason Currey's fascinating book, Daily Rituals How Great Minds Make Time, Find Inspiration, and Get to Work, began with a series of blog posts and eventually grew into this book.
  
  Currey has done extensive research -- as shown in his lengthy section of end notes -- to find out what the "great minds" -- such as Carl Jung, Igor Stravinsky, George Sand, Knut Hamsun, Maria Kalman, Gustave Flaubert, and many others -- "make time, find inspiration, and get to work" -- as the subtitle tells.
  
  In reading over the variety of opinions, it seems the best answer is to get up early, sleep in late, take naps, stay away for many hours, go to be early, stay up all night, work in bed, at your desk, in the pub, eating sparsely, abundantly, erratically, precisely, smoking, using drugs, drinking, being a teetotaller, stay completely clean, having sex often, and staying celibate.
  
  Or, as Bernard Malamud wrote, "There's no one way -- there's too much drivel about this subject. You're who you are, not Fitzgerald or Thomas Wolfe. You write by sitting down and writing. There's not particular time or place -- you suit yourself, your nature. How one works, assuming he's disciplined, doesn't matter. If he or she is not disciplined, no sympathetic magic will help. The trick is to make time -- not to steal it -- and produce the fiction. If the stories come, you get them written, you're on the right track. Eventually everyone learns his or her own best way. The real mystery to crack is you" (234).
  
  This is a fascinating, humorous, encouraging book. Enjoy!

• I enjoyed this book and I wrote a complete review on my website. It's a bit lengthy to post here, but the following excerpt should be more enough to get my point across.
  Is your creativity driven by a looming deadline? Do you need four or five cups of Diet Pepsi or tea before you can even think of putting one word on the paper? Does the rest of the world need to be sleeping for you to hit your stride? Do you sometimes type the title of an article on the page just to see words on the page? Okay, well maybe I’m the only one that does those things. If not, join the ranks of many creatives that have rituals or behaviors that get their creative muscles warmed up and ready for the battle of the blank sheet or canvas.
  
  As a creative who grew up with other creatives, Daily Rituals piqued my interest and would hopefully feed my curious nature. Maybe this middle of the night creative could pick up a few tricks of the trade from some of the most successful artists in the world. Perhaps I could gain a little insight into how they became so successful and in some cases are still going strong. If nothing else, it would be fun to take a peek behind the curtain.
  And it was. I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick, informative, enjoyable read.

• Do not pay attention to the watered-downed, modernized, "revised" manual of indulgences. The Vatican 2 church has been trying to do away with the Raccolta to appease the sentiments of the protestants who designed that awful council and have been keeping one of the greatest treasures of the Church away from the truly faithful (when was the last time you heard your confessor speak to you of Indulgences, hmm?). And I was quite annoyed when one stated to me after having received the Raccolta, "Oh, haven't you heard? There's no such thing as Purgatory anymore"! By what authority! Where did this terribly misguided individual hear such an absurd statement?!... from the men occupying the Vatican, straight from the top, that's where! Let me tell you that an established truth does not change just because the influences of time does. Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, the Sacraments, the Saints and the Martyrs... they do not and cannot change! Hence when going through the Raccolta one should be careful not to observe the "new rules" regarding Indulgences (not to worry, this book will tell you exactly how Indulgences (which can neither be sold nor bought) may be obtained. Now the English translation of the Raccolta was published in 1957 by the request of Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York under the Supreme Authority of Pope Pius XII, ex cathedra! The book itself is beautifully hardbound with sewn (not glued) pages. Within are literally thousands of prayers and acts of faith, all easily obtainable, set in a very easy to read typeset. There is no table of contents but turn to the back of the book and you will find the index. Even if you are not seeking out an Indulgence for yourself or a loved one, it is an excellent prayerbook of the highest order. You will not find the Raccolta in your parish bookstore. It is a timeless treasure that has no respect for the machinations of men.
• I had been curious about the Raccolta for several years and finally decided to order it. I wasn't disappointed. It has so many beautiful prayers I haven't found elsewhere, the format is really good and the size of the font is perfect for me. ( I don't have vision problems but I still prefer a readable font.) The sections are each very thorough, and there are many prayers to saints that I have never heard of. ( I always enjoy meeting more saints. Any friend of God is a friend of mine.)
• Very easy to look for specific wants...very well indexed.
  This book takes you back to the reverence of the Church before the “me first, not God” feeling of Vatican II.
  Sturdy cover and easy to read in all light.
  Very pleased with it.
• The LAST authoritative Raccolta. This is the source of indulgences for the few remaining Catholics who hold to Tradition.
• Some of these prayers I only remember as bits and pieces from my childhood.
  
  The collection runs the course from everyday personal devotions, to novena prayers, to prayers for Benediction and to pray at Mass. I am glad that I ran across this item. It is a treasured book of prayers and is fast becoming an important part of my personal devotions and meditations.
  
  If you are searching for a single collection of Catholic prayers and devotions (indulgenced) this is the prayerbook to obtain.
  
  Superb hardcover and using fine paper stock.
• This is THE book on gaining plenary and partial indulgences. Must have for every traditional Catholic home.
• This is a great resource book for the Catholic faith. I am very impressed with this book. If you want to learn about indulgences and prayer, this is worth every cent.
• I am so glad Loreto Press is reprinting some of the great classic books from Catholic history. This 1957 gem is most excellently typeset according to the original, very well bound, and a fantastic resource to have in my theological library.

"This was an inspirational book on bible journaling. I love bible journaling but struggle with creative ideas to fill the pages. This book gave some simple short cuts for those that don’t have a lot of confidence in their drawing skills. The authors gave some simple step by step instructions to draw a bird, flower, building and a cake.

Melissa and Kate provided many examples for drawings for specific bible verse. I am not sure I would want to use acrylic paint in my bible, but the authors showed creative techniques using black acrylic paint to give a chalkboard look.

• It's a nicely made book but I feel it is just a showcase of artwork. There is no technique, pretty much just copy the artwork in your bible. It is truly a book for only people that are already amazing artists. If you already have a bible journal book you don't need this one.
• It’s not until pg 42 that we go to the crux of the interesting material for techniques. Before that it’s too basic like the color theory or getting supplies such as an eraser! And the book consists on a few projects which are supposed to teach one particular technique but is mostly watercolors and too advanced. And the paper is thick very matte so the artwork is not clear nor well rendered. Consider instead "The art of Bible Journaling" or "Bible Journaling" from Fink and Yoder
• This book is beautifully detailed with everything from the basics for a beginner to lovely creative pushes for a more advanced bible art fan. I have enjoyed Melissa’s work for a while. So happy to see this collection come to my door.
• Wow! This book is FANTASTIC! It’s beautiful, easy to follow, and so inspiring. I can’t wait to start trying out these techniques! The step by step instructions and tutorials are a great place to start. I could not be more pleased with this book!
• This book has beautiful color illustrations, step-by-step instructions, product recommendations, and a large variety of illustration and lettering techniques. I will use a lot of the strategies in my bible journaling journey.
• This book is amazing! Mot only is it beautifully illustrated the technique and direction and guidance is easy to follow.
• I believe I've read and reviewed three or four books about Bible Art Journaling at this point. I was drawn into Bible Journaling for the Fine Artist because of the "fine artist" part. The illustrations included in this book from the two authors, Melissa Fischer and Kate Peiffer, were indeed fine. Yet the tutorials included seemed fairly basic to me. That's ideal for teaching a concept to students who may not be familiar with it that can be applied in a more complex way in the future.
  
  In terms of the supplies, techniques, and general information included in Bible Journaling for the Fine Artist, I didn't find anything new to me. Granted, I've watched hours of YouTube videos and read a few books on the subject already.
  
  The best thing I felt like Bible Journaling for the Fine Artist had going for it was the art included. But even then, I felt like I'd seen quite a number of the pages on Pinterest already. So even that didn't feel completely new or unique.
  
  Bible Journaling for the Fine Artist is fine if this is the only book you get on the subject or if you're new to the concept of Bible Art Journaling. • I stood in barnes and noble perusing this book and others but mainly this book and bought it. It shows a lot of good information in it that's helpful to me. Kinda made me mad at parts because it portrays us being treated like kids who cant control themselves and punishments for things and controlling our money and stuff. There are also tons of good information about the disease itself. Can you imagine wanting to be treated like a kid most of your life having someone check up on you though? Ugh. Anyway I found the book intriguing because of the treatment plans and being thorough on talking about the disease. I was told I have PTSD not this but I can identify with some things this book talks about so I bought it to look at it because some days it feels more like this than just PTSD. Either way I know its overshare but this book explains a lot to you about the disease and is easy to understand.
